Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step comes just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
