Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
